After years of limited public access, the Park Row project will improve north-south bike trips under the Brooklyn Bridge, and will link the bridge and Chinatown.

It's unreasonable to wait years for the promenade to be expanded when the city could repurpose a lane of bridge traffic for bicycling much faster.

Sixteen months after DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg announced a study of expanding the Brooklyn Bridge's narrow path for walking and biking, the results are finally here. But a wider path is still at least several years away, if it proves feasible at all.

A frustrating gap in the Lower Manhattan bike network is about to get filled, as DOT crews wrap up installation of a curb-protected bike lane outside City Hall.

The new and improved entry path to the Brooklyn Bridge Promenade from Downtown Brooklyn is finally rideable. If the rest of the bridge path ever gets a widening and makeover to match this one, it will become one of the great walking and biking connections in New York.

The big change in DOT's plan is a two-way section of bike lane protected by a concrete barrier on Park Row, plus a short contraflow lane on Spruce Street. It's not a lot of bike lane mileage, but it's a key link in the network that will be dramatically improved.

With crowding on the Brooklyn Bridge walking and biking path in a state of near constant low-level emergency, this week NYC DOT announced a feasibility study of widening the bridge’s promenade. A path with sufficient space for the thousands of commuters, exercisers, and tourists who walk and bike across the bridge each day would be an immensely valuable improvement. But what if the same benefits could be derived at less cost by claiming space on the Brooklyn Bridge roadway?
