Crowded, Car-Choked Downtown Flushing Shouldn’t Be a Void in the Bike Network
At a DOT forum to plan for better bicycling conditions in downtown Flushing, Council Member Peter Koo told the packed room he doesn't believe bike lanes belong in the area. Koo did not stick around for the rest of the meeting, but if he had, he would have heard a different story from his constituents, many of whom see biking as the only viable way to get to Flushing's dense downtown core.

DOT Plans Six Miles of Protected Bike Lanes to Connect Eastern Queens Bikeways
Last summer, a speeding motorist struck and killed Michael Schenkman, 78, as Schenkman attempted to turn onto the Joe Michaels Mile bike path, where he rode daily. Now NYC DOT has produced a plan to link Joe Michaels Mile to six miles of on-street protected bike lanes.

DOT Proposes Safer Walking and Biking Connections to Highland Park
A dangerous street that connects Glendale to Ridgewood Reservoir, Highland Park, and two cemeteries is in line for traffic-calming and safer bike lanes thanks to a request from the local police precinct. Cypress Hills Street has a divided median and highway-like curves that do little to prevent motorists from speeding - it's an obstacle to good walking and biking access, despite its buffered bike lanes.

Queens Boulevard Safety Overhaul in Rego Park Clears Community Board 6 Committee
Last night, the public got a look at the next phase of DOT's Queens Boulevard redesign, which will extend protected bike lanes, pedestrian safety improvements, and traffic calming treatments through Rego Park to Yellowstone Boulevard. The project got a thumbs up from the Queens Community Board 6 transportation committee in a 7 to 3 vote.

Karen Koslowitz Walks Back Her Pledge to Support a Safer Design for Queens Boulevard
Two years ago, Council Member Karen Koslowitz stood with people who'd lost loved ones to traffic violence and said the city should do "whatever it takes" to turn deadly Queens Boulevard into a "boulevard of life" -- even if that entailed the removal of travel lanes or parking spaces. Now that the city is ready to redesign Queens Boulevard in her district, however, Koslowitz is losing her resolve.
