Gas Tax Hike Will Help New Jersey Pay for New Rail Tunnel
To history’s list of epic negotiations, we may someday add the prospective deal to finance the Gateway Project between Newark’s and New York City’s Penn Stations. With two belligerent states, a disgraced Port Authority, and Amtrak and the federal government on the hook for Gateway’s $15 billion (and counting) expense, divvying up the cost will be contentious, to say the least. But the final equation will almost certainly include a rise in New Jersey’s stunningly low gasoline tax.

Chris Christie Keeps Trying to Balance NJ’s Books on Backs of Transit Riders
Governor Chris Christie has really made a mess of New Jersey's transportation finances. Since 2011, the governor's "flipping the couch cushions" strategy has resulted in the state amassing an additional $5.2 billion in debt.

Chris Christie’s Worst Traffic Outrage Didn’t Happen in Fort Lee

Independent Federal Report Confirms: Christie Lied To Kill ARC Tunnel
It was never about cost overruns. It was never about New Jersey's share of the price tag. Chris Christie's decision to kill the ARC tunnel under the Hudson River was always about two, and only two, things: the governor's unwillingness to raise the state's rock-bottom gas tax and his desire to make a name for himself among national Republicans.

Schumer Calls for Increased Transit Spending, Slams Christie
In a speech at a Crain's breakfast this morning, Senator Chuck Schumer called for reinvesting in infrastructure, including repairs to New York's existing transportation system and new transit projects. Schumer also blasted New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for killing the ARC tunnel and for his proposal to use Port Authority funds to pay for maintaining New Jersey roads.

Christie Rewrites ARC History: My Wife Made Me Do It
Having killed the badly-needed ARC tunnel not once but twice, you'd think that Governor Chris Christie would at least have the decency to let the issue go. But no. He's got a whole new reason for opposing it. Now, apparently, the seed of the ARC's destruction came from Christie's wife Mary Pat, who was no fan of the deep-underground Midtown terminal.

Christie Threatening to Kill ARC For Good on Friday
Unless something changes quickly, the Christie administration is expected to (again) kill the badly-needed ARC transit tunnel this Friday. The tunnel would double capacity for New Jersey Transit into Manhattan, providing more and faster trips for commuters, and ease the pressure on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor trains [PDF].

Ray LaHood, Chris Christie Extend ARC Talks
Well, we've now entered a phase of the ARC drama where I think it's fair to wonder whether Chris Christie may simply be adept at brinkmanship. After having a sit-down with Ray LaHood in Trenton today, Christie agreed to reconsider his decision to kill the trans-Hudson rail tunnel project. Sprawl vs. compact development, traffic vs. trains, economic stagnation vs. an engine for growth -- it all hangs in the balance.

ARC Post-Mortem: Chris Christie Afraid to Bite the Bullet
After yesterday's ARC decision, I couldn't help thinking of this morsel of wisdom from New York Lieutenant Governor Richard Ravitch last April:
