Sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning, NYPD surrounded Flatiron Plaza, where Broadway crosses Fifth Avenue, with concrete barriers. Similar barriers could be coming to public spaces throughout the city in the name of NYPD's counterterror initiatives.

A hit-and-run driver killed a man cycling in Bushwick early Friday morning, and a yellow cab driver killed an elderly man walking in Greenwich Village last night. NYPD blamed the victim in both cases.

Manhattan CB 7 Wants Protected Bike Lanes for Columbus Circle
Manhattan Community Board 7 wants DOT to make it safer to walk and bike through Columbus Circle. In May, the board's transportation committee passed a resolution calling for protected bike lanes in the large traffic circle at the southwest corner of Central Park. The full board approved the resolution last night.

DOT to Widen Sidewalks on 7th Avenue Between Penn Station and Times Square
Midtown sidewalks are notoriously too skinny to handle the huge numbers of people on foot near Penn Station. The pedestrian crush around the nation's busiest transit hub routinely flows beyond the boundaries of the curb, and people are forced to walk in car lanes. It's uncomfortable, stressful, and dangerous. But people on foot will soon have some breathing room.

Xin Kang Wang, 74, Dies Ten Days After Taxi Passenger Doored Him on 20th Street
Xin Kang Wang, 74, died on Sunday, 10 days after a taxi passenger doored him on 20th Street. The driver had pulled into the bike lane ahead of Wang immediately beforehand, police said. Wang was heading east on 20th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue when the passenger exited the vehicle and hit him with the door.
