DOT Pledged Ped Safety Fixes by 2006 on Deadly Third Ave
New York City's Department of Transportation failed to follow through on a 2004 pledge to build potentially life-saving pedestrian safety improvements along the Third Avenue corridor where a 4-year-old boy was run over and killed last Tuesday.

Plan Urged Safety Measures for Intersection Where Boy Died
The May 2003 final report of the Downtown Brooklyn Traffic Calming Project recommended pedestrian safety measures designed specifically to prevent the kind of collision that killed a four-year-old boy in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon.

Birth Announcement and Illegal Permit Parking
Aaron Naparstek, the editor of Streetsblog, and his wife Joanne Nerenberg announce the birth of their second son, Saul Oren Naparstek, Thursday, February 1, 2:01 pm. Saul weighed in at 7 pounds, 5 ounces and was 20 inches tall. He was born at Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn with a city government employee parked on the sidewalk, blocking access to a small park just outside the window of his room.

The State of the City
Mayor Bloomberg delivered his State of the City address at Brooklyn Tech yesterday afternoon. Anyone hoping to hear policy proposals on traffic, transportation, livable streets, climate change and long-term sustainability issues was likely disappointed.

Below is an interesting e-mail sent yesterday to Transportation Alternatives. T.A. forwarded it to Streetsblog and we all thought that it would make fodder for an interesting discussion. The letter's author gave Streetsblog permission to publish it. One of my questions is whether people think that this cyclist's approach is a productive way for New York City's urban environmental advocates to press their case?

Did a Blogger’s Big Scoop Stall “Atlantic Yards?”
NY1 is reporting a rumor that Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver will not vote to approve Forest City Ratner's Atlantic Yards development project at tomorrow's three-men-in-a-room meeting of the Public Authorities Control Board. (Amazingly, this one meeting constitutes the only legislative "debate" and vote that this massive project will ever see). NY1 reports:
