When we think about core strength – if we think about core strength! – we think about that abdominal six-pack. The abdominal six-pack may get you a date, but it won't get you stability, endurance and power on the bike, or prevent injury. For that you need the core muscles, essentially pelvic and scapular stabilizers such as glutes, transversus, obliques and lats, but others as well. How to activate these muscles, without gaining the bulk of a musclehead, is the topic for the evening, with presenters Bob Nelson, Seth Greiner and Amy McGorry, all physical therapists at H & D Physical Therapy in Manhattan.

The Center for Sustainable Energy convenes its 3rd Annual Conference on Alternative Vehicle Technology on the historic campus of Bronx Community College. Coinciding with the College’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the Conference brings the best of the past together with the technology of the present on our way to a sustainable energy future. The Road to Energy Independence is a gathering of alternative vehicle policy makers and stakeholders focused on getting energy efficient vehicles on New York City’s vast network of streets and highways. Concerns over energy security, climate change, economic development, and environmental justice make the time right for a new city alternative vehicle strategy. This conference will convene New York City’s alternative vehicle community to take stock of the progress made toward sustainable vehicular transport.

Join cyclists who will ride in honor of two New York City youths who have perished while riding their bikes. Luis Ramos, 18, was killed on June 23rd while he was biking to work on Flushing Avenue near Beaver Street. Carolina Hernandez, 13, was killed August 17th by a turning truck while crossing the street on her bike at the corner of 57th Avenue and Junction Boulevard.
