Streetfilm: The Diverter

 
From Streetfilms’ animation division comes the third installment of traffic-calming shorts from Elizabeth Press. First she brought you chicanes, then the raised crosswalk. Now comes the diverter, which Elizabeth explains like so:

Diagonal diverters, half closures, entrance barriers, median barriers,
semi-diverters; traffic calming techniques come in all shapes and
sizes. They can help create more livable communities. As demonstrated
in this short animation, once the diverters are in place, traffic
decreases on the side street. Cars on the side street must turn left,
but cyclists can continue straight. This makes the side street safer
for cyclists and pedestrians.

    I like! I like! But it could have been a little bit longer.

    Also, why would you want to do this? I know the answers but its not at all apparent in the video for those who don’t.

  • Ok, I’ll bite – perhaps one of these could be used on a crosstown bike lane to create…a bike boulevard?

  • I like the idea in principal but just knowing NYC drivers and their driving ways I see them going around the divider and continuing their same path down the street. Making it more dangerous for cyclists like me trying to bike straight while a car is trying to swerve around the divider.

    Awesome series of films though, I keep continuing to learn about the the different traffic options that exist out there. Thanks for the hard work.

  • I see your point Steve. A big sign saying “No Through Traffic” could work along with a big speed bump and 5 mph speed limit could severely diminish traffic on those streets.

    If we have “Thru Streets” for cars, it only makes sense to have other streets be “Calm Streets” for pedestrians and bikes…

    Anything like these would be welcome to help cut thru traffic in neighborhoods. It’s just one sample, but it might work in some places.
