The latest streets and transportation news from Streetsblog NYC.

Good morning dear Streetsblog readers,

I took yesterday off to enjoy an afternoon Mets game (and Mets win!) — but the real win was being able to get home from Citi Field without needing to transfer to a notoriously slow and crowded G train shuttle bus like I have after many a night game this season. Of course, there’s always the option of taking a Citi Bike when the G train is down… but that’s a tricky gambit when it comes to finding a place to dock.

As Streetsblog Summer Specialist Emily Smith reports, the bikeshare system is struggling to accommodate the surging number of cyclists who ride its bikes to access and navigate Greenpoint amid this year’s repeated closures of the neighborhood’s only subway line, as local officials call on Citi Bike’s parent company to fix the bike-share system for good.

This is a particularly stark issue on the weekends: In this year alone, the MTA has suspended sections of the G train on 16 weekends for repairs and signal modernization.

We need those fixes for a more reliable (and frequent) G train in the future, but here in the present, local elected officials are proposing some solutions to reduce the impact of these shutdowns on Greenpointers and others trying to get between Bed-Stuy and Long Island City on the crosstown train.

Peace out,
Emily
