Eyes on the Street: The Fifth Avenue Bike Lane Gets Flipped
DOT crews made quick progress on striping Fifth Avenue's new protected bike lane this week. The project flips the parking lane along 15 blocks of the old buffered bike lane, providing protection from moving traffic between 23rd Street and 8th Street.

Tuff Luck: DOT Nixes Rush Hour Protection on Second Avenue Bike Lane
Last summer, DOT put forward a plan to install a protected bike lane on Second Avenue between 59th Street and 43rd Street. Now the new bike lane is in place, but the "tuff curbs" that are supposed to protect it during rush hour are nowhere to be seen, and DOT has no intention of adding them.

NYPD Surrounds Flatiron Plaza With Concrete Barriers, Because Terrorism
Sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning, NYPD surrounded Flatiron Plaza, where Broadway crosses Fifth Avenue, with concrete barriers. Similar barriers could be coming to public spaces throughout the city in the name of NYPD's counterterror initiatives.

After drivers killed two cyclists in the district last month, Manhattan Community Board 4 is reiterating its request for DOT to install protected bike lanes on crosstown streets in Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen.

NYPD Blames Victim After Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Cyclist Ronald Burke in Bushwick
A hit-and-run driver killed a man cycling in Bushwick early Friday morning, and a yellow cab driver killed an elderly man walking in Greenwich Village last night. NYPD blamed the victim in both cases.
