Three children were killed by New York city motorists last week, including a 3-year-old hit by an alleged drunk driver in Queens Friday night. Hours earlier, a 64-year-old man was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Brooklyn.

Three New York City pedestrians, including a young child, were killed by motorists over the weekend. Two of the crashes were hit-and-runs.

Eyes on the Street: Another Crash at Dangerous Jackson Heights Corner
Clarence came across this crash scene on Northern Boulevard at 80th Street in Jackson Heights yesterday at 7:00 p.m. This is the same intersection where a dump truck driver ran over and killed 11-year-old Miguel Torres the morning of December 28. If the traffic pole hadn't stopped this car from barreling down the sidewalk, the consequences of this crash could have been just as severe.

Is This the First NYC Community Board Meeting Held in a Public Plaza?
I can't say with certainty that this is the first NYC community board meeting held in a public plaza, but it certainly is the first I've heard of in my 22 years in New York City. On Thursday, Queens Community Board 3 held their monthly meeting amid the hustle and bustle of Jackson Heights' Diversity Plaza on 37th Road between 73rd and 74th Streets.

Eyes on the Street: Jackson Heights’ Beautiful New Bike Corral
Spring has sprung, and with it came a new on-street bike corral on 82nd Street in Jackson Heights, near Roosevelt Avenue. Clarence from Streetfilms sent over these great pictures. The corral, which replaces one car parking space, has seven racks (for 14 bikes) and two planters. It is maintained by the 82nd Street Partnership business improvement district and was supported by Queens Community Board 4 in a 32-2 vote in March.

Eyes on the Street: A Slow Zone Takes Shape in East Elmhurst
Clarence snapped these shots of a new Slow Zone in East Elmhurst/Jackson Heights, where DOT is putting in 20 mph signage and street markings, including a wide striped median on 30th Avenue that reduces the number of lanes pedestrians must cross.

Yesterday we ran a Q&A with Democratic District Leader Costa Constantinides. There are two other candidates in this district. Antonio Meloni responded to Streetsblog’s questionnaire but did not provide answers for publication. Danielle De Stefano did not respond.
