The latest streets and transportation news from Streetsblog NYC.
The following is a message from Lisa Orman, the co-executive director of Open Plans, our parent company, that we thought we’d share:
It’s an urgent and fascinating time for our city, and for the future of its streets. With the 2025 citywide primary elections underway and heightened tensions over how we use public space, we’re especially grateful for your support, readership, and enthusiasm. From relentless coverage of Mayor Adams’s outrageous NYPD crackdown on cyclists to the newly launched Car Harms series, the Streetsblog team has been shining a light on the deep, often overlooked costs of car dependency.
And the work is getting noticed! Editor-in-Chief Gersh Kuntzman has led the newsroom to some exciting recognition: Streetsblog was recently honored by the Deadline Club as a finalist in two award categories, winning one for digital video reporting by Engagement Editor Emily Lipstein. And just a few nights ago, Gersh and reporter Sophia Lebowitz attended the Silurians Press Club Awards dinner, where Streetsblog was honored once again with a prize for its investigation into the scam of fake chaplain placards. We’re proud of them, and we’re proud to have you standing with us. You can read Gersh’s recap in Thursday’s Streetsblog headlines and on the homepage. This kind of journalism doesn’t happen without readers and supporters like you. Your generosity fuels our reporting, holds decision-makers accountable, and ensures these stories reach the public, policymakers and other media outlets who need to hear them. If you haven’t yet, we hope you’ll check out the Car Harms series – it’s a sobering and powerful reminder of why this work matters.
Thank you for helping to keep safe streets journalism alive. Every donation you’re able to give, large or small, fuels our ability to keep publishing stories that matter. As summer begins, we’ll continue fighting for safer, more joyful streets and spaces. A contribution today ensures we can keep holding city leaders accountable – we’re so grateful to have your partnership.
Troopers based in NYC routinely blew off their duties to chill, sleep with their girlfriends and, in one notorious case, drive to a strip club in New Jersey, get drunk and get arrested for assault, Streetsblog has learned.
