The latest streets and transportation news from Streetsblog NYC.
TGIF!
After flooding shutting down parts of the BQE and a water spout off of Jamaica Bay, it seems apt that today is a gorgeous and comparatively cool late summer day — the perfect weather for enjoying NYC on foot or on two wheels.
For example, why not take a trip down to Red Hook on the Columbia St. Waterfront/Van Brunt St. bike path? It’s not like riding there on the bus will be any faster — especially not when more housing comes to the Brooklyn Marine Terminal site.
As Kevin Duggan reports this morning, officials have revealed plans for a “bus rapid transit” corridor on Van Brunt and Columbia streets to help filter out spillover traffic from the nearby Brooklyn-Queens Expressway that too often chokes the area’s streets today.
The city-run development agency had not previously answered how it planned to handle transportation to and from the site, which sits more than a mile from the nearest subway stop. Critics including local State Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon have cited the lack of clarity in transportation planning among the reasons for their opposition. A busway should put those concerns to bed.
Keep key lime pie on your mind as you dive into that news and more at the links below.
Happy weekend-ing, Emily
