The latest streets and transportation news from Streetsblog NYC.

Yesterday, two men were killed when one of them, riding an illegal stand-up scooter capable of speeds of 50 miles per hour, crashed into the other, a cyclist on a regular, albeit a super light, carbon fiber, bike on the Queensboro Bridge.

Streetsblog has long championed safe streets, so we would be remiss if we didn’t offer, again, a primer on how policymakers can not only make sense of Thursday’s horrific crash, but also help ensure that it never happen again.

Having streets that are the “envy of the world” almost means that those streets aren’t taken over by illegal vehicles, as many of New York’s streets indeed have been.

Here’s hoping Sophia Lebowitz’s insightful analysis ends up in Mayor Mamdani’s press packet today.
