The latest streets and transportation news from Streetsblog NYC.
Gersh is back from a few days of R&R only to return to find the city in flames. Yes, he did say he was pleased by the fine work that the Streetsblog staff did during his absence (kudos to Kevin Duggan’s world-leading coverage of Mayor Moses’s — er Mamdani’s — Brooklyn-Queens Expressway rebuild debacle, though clearly we’ll have even more to say on that going forward).
In addition to all that BQE ink, Duggan is back today with an analysis piece of that seemingly harmless video that Mayor Mamdani put out earlier this month about how he’s going to start wearing a helmet when he rides his bike. Huh? Here’s a man who understands that making roadways safe is a collective responsibility of his administration, yet he still falls back on individual responsibility … by wearing a device that even manufacturers admit is no protection from the drivers of three-ton motor vehicles? Sure, the Times gushed, but, frankly, we’re shocked that Hizzoner has joined the, “… Well, he wasn’t wearing a helmet” club.
We’re hoping to raise the issue at tonight’s Transportation Alternatives’ “die in” to honor the three cyclists (two of whom were wearing a helmet, by the way) who were killed by hit-and-run drivers earlier this month. We’ll see you in City Hall Park at 6 p.m.
