About the Weekly Carnage

  • Angus Grieve-Smith

A minor correction to the Aubergine Cafe caption: the photo is of the crash from last Thursday, November 1. John has a photo of the 2005 crash, but has not put it on the web.

There are two more photos of Thursday’s crash on Queens Crap. This intersection is a block from my apartment, and I’m a regular customer at Aubergine . It’s a popular spot for people to bring their children, and customers often linger outside with strollers. Gary, the owner, told me that he saw a parent pull their child out of the way just before the van hit.

Transportation Alternatives’ crash maps show that this three-block stretch had eleven pedestrian injuries in the 1995-2001 study period. The demand for safety improvements in the neighborhood seems to be growing, and hopefully we can do something to prevent someone from getting killed.

A slight change of format this week as Streetsblog adds a completely unscientific tally of the metropolitan area’s weekly motor vehicle death count, and divides crash coverage between fatal crashes, crashes that cause injuries and those that result merely in property damage. (I expect most coverage to relate to fatal crashes as the nonfatal […]
