Is This the Best Transit Ad Ever?

The idea of investing in transit is popular with Americans, even among those who don’t depend on it. But trains and buses, buses in particular, have always had an image problem. U.S. transit providers could take a cue from this Danish ad, which makes light of the mundane nature of bus travel (free handles!) in a way that actually makes transit look “cool.” Turn on the captions for the full effect.

    Nice to see some socially positive propaganda, but it’s hardly accurate. Buses actually are loud, cramped, chaotic, and uncomfortable. ūüôĀ

    Kudos for the references to the male genitalia though.

    Bolwerk: your buses may be loud/cramped/uncomfortable, but ours are quiet (on the inside) and have reclining seats for everyone.

    @tomwest: Are they electric trolleybuses or something? I’ve never seen a quiet diesel bus, and I rather doubt one is possible.¬†

    I kind of agree with Bolwerk here. While the new buses in NYC are worlds better than the “roach coaches” we had back in the 1970s/80s, they’re hardly quiet. And the constant speed changes make for anything but a pleasant ride (the express buses might be marginally better in that regard). I’ll take even a mediocre subway over a “nice” bus any day of the week.

    I completely disagree about preferring a subway over the express bus.  The express bus has a much more comfortable seat, nobody bothering me, quieter than the rails and certainly without the crazy passengers.

    But I’m too frugal to ride an express bus regularly. ¬†So I crowd onto the subway cattle cars where I’ve given up trying to listen to an iPod because I’ll lose my hearing if I turn it up loud enough to actually hear my music…

    The creature comforts of express buses come at such a high cost that they are neither affordable nor sustainable to pay for, except on behalf of a few entitled suburban commuters.

    And my comment hardly applied to just NYC buses. Operating procedures may be more sensible elsewhere, but the physical act of riding buses in European cities is no less unpleasant.

    I think it is an¬†unacceptable¬†waste of money for a transit agency that relies on subsidies to spend money in “brand marketing” or similar expenses. It is outrageous. If a transit agency cannot reach at least 100% farebox recovery ratio, it should spend on advertising ONLY for public service announcements about routes, service changes etc. Never, ever for branding.¬†

    Buses SUCK BIG TIME. American bus drivers are dicks to cyclists, buses clog up roads, are stuck in the same traffic, are loud on the outside and cramped on the inside and buses wear out infrastructure buses provide less passengers per driver and buses have 1/10 the life of rail cars. I’m bummed to see bus travel being promoted in Denmark.

    Did I mention that buses SUCK?

    Andrelot exhibits the typical circular logic that helps keep transit behind.  

    If we ran transit more like a business, as his claims suggest, we would advertise to increase penetration. ¬†We would consider the return on investment of the ad. ¬†He will demand we never spend a cent on advertising… even though it will increase ridership and improve the farebox recovery.

    F YEAH, BUSES!  I have witnessed tens of thousands of automobile ads trying to convince me how amazing cars are.

    This is the first bus ad that says, Buses are cool.¬† If you are complaining about this, … wow.

    Guess you don’t ride them, then, eh? Because they don’t suck. And the, oh, I don’t know 120ish people on my very full bus this morning (a route that departs every 8-10 minutes, with a full to standing load every time) kept 120ish cars off the highway. And, once you get that awesome bus into the HOT/HOV/BRT lane, they are separated from normal traffic. I got to work in less time, with less money than if I had driven, and I got to read the entire way. Is that what your commute is like?
