Why would someone from Copenhagen visit Augusta, Georgia?

  • Anonymous

Wow, I’ve only found four instances of motor vehicles crashing off of the roadway in NYC in August so far!  What a wonderful record!

Re: Queens man who struck cops… Spoiler alert! Criminality is suspected!

There was at least one other incident of a car crashing off the roadway a couple of weeks ago and hitting a building. August 11th, a taxi cab that was probably turning south collided with a car heading east on Houston Street at Thompson. For whatever reason this event didn’t receive any media coverage.

It would be very good policy for establishing safe streets — perhaps especially first in  “Twenty is plenty zones” — that every intersection that people cross at be marked as a crosswalk giving them the right of way under NYS law.

1152.   Crossing at other than crosswalks.
    (a) Every pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right of way to all vehicles upon the roadway.

North AmericaState and provincial road rules in the United States and Canada typically require a driver to yield the right of way to a pedestrian crossing a road when the pedestrian crosses at a marked crosswalk or an unmarked crosswalk. Unmarked crosswalks generally exist as the logical extensions of sidewalks at intersections with approximately right angles.

Dr. Oz’s NY Med episode last night (and past episodes) show the carnage caused by drivers.  Last night there were 9 cases featured:
    1. Cut to a hand from a fight requiring a few stitches (minor)
    2. Skin irritation from a chemical peel by a dermatologist (minor)
    3. Miscarriage with some internal bleeding (relatively minor)
    4. Newborn with major heart defects that needed to be corrected surgically
    5. Elderly lady with inoperable stomach cancer
    6. Elderly lady (87 yrs) with a failing heart valve that was operable
    7. Bicyclist hit by a taxi driver; cyclist suffered two broken bones in his leg
    8. Car passenger not wearing a seatbelt thrown from the car when it overturned after a tire blow out causing a near amputation of her arm requiring major reconstruction
    9. Pedestrian crossing the road hit by a driver; pedestrian died from his injuries within an hour

It seems medical dollars are going mostly to injuries from car collisions, secondly to the elderly and thirdly to pregnancy related issues, with a small amount going to other problems.  I’m guessing that the “violent crime” that caused the cut to the hand probably got more NYPD attention that the “no criminality suspected” act of a driver mauling and killing a pedestrian who was crossing a street.

The naturally occurring disease in the elderly is unfortunate but is part of aging.  However, the carnage from the drivers were all preventable and that is so tragic and sad.  The cyclist should not have had two bones broken by an aggressive, angry cab driver.  A pedestrian should not have had his leg crushed, his pelvis broken and his internal organs hemorrhaging to the point of death by a careless, distracted or impatient driver.  The passenger could have worn a seatbelt like the other two car occupants and been okay when the car overturned instead of being thrown from the car and having permanent arm damage.

Also I was so upset at the cyclist’s fiancee who made him promise the stop bike commuting.  Instead of being galvanized against dangerous driving and working to make the streets safer, she wants to give the streets to drivers.  The cyclist resisted making the promise to her but she kept asking and he eventually relented.  It’s a shame that she put her energy in the wrong place.  Telling cyclists and pedestrians to stay off the streets because drivers are dangerous is not the solution.  Fighting to re-design streets so that drivers can not drive so dangerously is the solution!

So if a car driver hits a police officer, who is released uninjured from hospital, the charge is attempted murder.  But if its just a little old lady who is hit and killed, no criminality is suspected.

Looks like it not just when parking their cars that there is one law for the police, and a totally different law for us peasants.
