excellent example of editorializing with that lead picture…

As I was commuting home Friday evening, I began to think that, sadly, these “weekly carnage” posts will  likely be around for a long time to come.

The weather was nice and the bike lane on Second Avenue was filled. If you took a snap shop and masked some of the signs it could have passed for Amsterdam. But, with regard to safety, it was still New York.

At 23rd Street, when the cyclists’ green light came on, every single driver in the left turn lane disregarded their red arrow and proceeded into the intersection – as if blowing through a red light and pushing your car through a stream of cyclists was business as usual.

At 14th Street, the cyclists’ green illuminated, and the first car in the left hand lane, blew through its red arrow too. Fortunately, the second one actually obeyed the light, stopped, and cyclists could proceed safely.

I got in a good work out at the gym and headed home. At the Greenway exit, the pedestrian “walk” sign illuminated and I began to cross. One driver found the wait too much to bear, blew through the crosswalk and ran the red light. The others then pulled up to fully block the crosswalk. I had to pick up my bike and shimmy through between cars.

I yelled to one of the drivers – “you’re blocking the crosswalk” – but her radio was cranked up so high and she was so busy banging her fists to the beat on the steering wheel, she didn’t notice.

I see that the DOT’s bicycle division and advocacy groups such as Transportation Alternatives seem to take safety and civility seriously. I’m consistently receiving information from both of them encouraging safe and polite cycling. It would be helpful if auto groups such as the AAA would do similar campaigns for driving. Many of their people seem to have a way to go.

No matter what, the driver should feel sorry to kill a sweet 16-year old. I did not hear anything about her apologizing to Aileen’s family. Cruel.
