  • That first crash pictured happened in my home town. They believe the driver of the SUV had a heart attack before crossing the line and crashing into the bus. If any crash come close to being an “accident” I’d say that would be it.

Also, the Bugatti story proves that money can’t buy you brains.

I was at the wake for the 14 year old boy in Old Bridge. 2 hrs into the 3 hr viewing, the line of mourners stretched from the bulding through the parking lot of the funeral home and onto the sidewalk. Nearly every kid from his school must have been there, and the kids were inconsolable. The only minor positive that one could draw from this tragedy is that some of those kids may remember this when they drive.

The mouth-breathers were in full force on nj.com, blaming the victim for crossing the highway other than at a pedestrian bridge or traffic light. In typical fashing, they neglect that no sane person considers jaywalking a capital offense, or that he was nowhere near one of those designated crossings.

He would have had to ride 1/2 mile south in the NB lanes of Rt. 18 to get to the nearest pedestrian bridge or 3/4 mile north to the next crosswalk, requring him to cross several on & off ramps without stop signs. Drivers would not tolerate that level of inconvenience. Pedestrians and cyclists are expected to do so while shouldering nearly all of the risk.

Rt. 18 is an engineering failure on a scale so massive, it can’t be recognized by most people. NJDOT may as well put up signs in central New Jersey that read “Get a Car or Get Out.”

Here’s another fatal crash for the statistics:

Fatal crash at North Conduit and 78th Street, Queens

    2 vehicles involved. 1 dead.

  • Wow, clever-title, your following me.

On a more serious note, I’m very familiar with the scene of the Old Bridge crash. I sometime ride in in the area and have got to say that using the nearby Rt 516 bridge to cross over Rt 18 is really like running the gauntlet. I can understand why a kid took his chances and tried to cross Rt 18 where he did.

Unfortunately, NJDOT is STILL clueless to the needs of bikes and peds when they design new infrastructure. That bridge I mention was due for a complete rebuild (for what reason, I’m not sure since traffic is busy but not congested) but the needs of peds and bicyclists were not given any noticeable attention. When I questioned at a public meeting on the project why bike lanes where not built into the project I was told that there would be shoulders over the bridge (I can’t remember how pedestrians were address exactly but it wasn’t given much thought). Otherwise it was typical 1960’s, move ’em fast, move alot of ’em, engineering. For cyclists at least the new designed possibly offered just minor relief.

Last I heard the whole project was being reconsidered and scaled down and now the old 516 bridge will probably be reused but I haven’t seen any updated plans.
